_It was narrated that Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه said: ‘O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'While I was praying at home, a man came in and it pleased me to know the state he found me in.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘May Allah bless you Abū Hurayrah.You will have two rewards; the reward (for doing it) in secret and the reward (for doing it) openly.’_
Every statement of Rasūlullah ﷺ is priceless. From every Ḥadith, we can gain abundant knowledge. From this Ḥadīth, learn that when a person performs a deed with an intention to show off, the deed no longer holds weight in the sight of Allah ﷻ. In fact, when showing off, the person loses out on rewards.
On the day of Qiyāmah, it will be said to the person who performed deeds for other than Allah ﷻ, (to the nearest meaning) 'go and get your reward from such and such person for whom you intended to do it for'. Therefore we should always check our intention and ourselves who we are we doing a deed for.
However, we may sometimes be doing a good deed and it becomes disclosed to others, as mentioned in the ḥadīth above. In this case, one won't be sinful.
Islām encourages having a balanced approach. Imān requires striking a balance between fear and hope. We shouldn't be inclined to one extreme. Sometimes a person reads so much and becomes extremely fearful of Allah ﷻ, to such an extent that they become anxious and despondent. This is wrong.
Ḥakīmul Ummah Mawlāna Ashraf Ali Thānwī رحمه الله was a greatly intelligent scholar who authored several books. It is tried and tested by many that whoever reads his books never becomes despondent in the mercy of Allahﷻ. In fact, it makes a person strong in their Imān. People who would read different books and became fearful would come to him and leave his gathering happy and optimistic.
From this, scholars can also learn a lesson to be compassionate with the people and instil love in the people, rather than hatred. Even if we have to speak about the the Ākhirah, we should balance it out by mentioning the benefits of Tawbah (repentance). The Messenger ﷺ in another Ḥadīth advised the scholars:
*بشروا ولا تنفروا*
_"Give people glad tidings, and do not create aversion (by overwhelming them with fear)."_
Shaykh 'AbdulQādir Jīlāni رحمه الله would often attract people with his inspirational speeches. Once he gave a powerful speech which led to the passing away of a few people. Upon seeing this, he stopped.
```May Allah ﷻ grant us His love, love for Rasūlullah ﷺ, and the ability to practise on everything that has been said. Āmīn```
