_Zayd bin Arqam رضي الله عنه narrates the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "When a man makes a promise to his brother with the intention of fulfilling it but does not fulfil it and does not come at the appointed time, then there is no sin upon him." (Abū Dawūd)_

Sometimes we take a sin lightly, not realising that it may be of a greater importance in the sight of Allah ﷻ. Some sins are such that they destroy our good deeds. Allah ﷻ states in the Qur'ān:
*{أن تحبط اعمالكم وانتم لا تشعرون}*
_"....Lest your deeds become worthless whilst you do not perceive (that)."_ (Al Hujurāt, 2)
Therefore we must be cautious and take the ḥarām seriously. An example of sin given in the ḥadīth is about breaking a promise. Often we take a promise very lightly and give it no significance. For example we say: "I will come tomorrow" or "I will give it to you tomorrow." In such situations, if we are insincere in our promise, we will be sinful. We must ensure that we have a sincere intention to fulfil the promises we make. Do not commit to something if you cannot fulfil its responsibilities nor commit to something just to get rid of the request. This is strongly discouraged if one has no intention to complete the given task. Allah ﷻ says:
*{وَلَا تَقُولَنَّ لِشَيْءٍ إِنِّي فَاعِلٌ ذَلِكَ غَدًا إِلَّا أَن يَشَاء الله}*
_And never say of anything "indeed I will do that tomorrow" except when adding In shā'Allah (if Allah wills)."_ (Al Kahf 23-24)

If it wasn't for the mercy of Allah ﷻ, we would have no hope. Allah ﷻ keeps inviting us to His mercy. Allah ﷻ repeatedly asks us to repent and not to lose hope in His mercy. Everytime we sin, we should turn back to Allahﷻ. If the sin is against Allah ﷻ’s rights, then ask for forgiveness and begin rectifying it, such as making up for the missed prayers.
If the sin involves the rights of others, then do not delay in asking for forgiveness. If we do not ask for forgiveness, we will be held accountable.
Therefore, seek forgiveness from those you may have spoken ill of. It may take a lot of courage but not taking this step can be detrimental to our future. Remember, we do not need to clarify and give details of the hurt we caused them. And if someone asks us for forgiveness, we too should not ask for clarification.

At the time of Ḥasan al-Baṣri رحمه الله , there was an orphan who went off track and became a drug addict. This weakened his health and made him bed-ridden. The boy realised his life will soon come to an end and his heart was filled with remorse over his actions. He requested his mother to tie a cloth around his neck after his death and drag him along the streets of the city, as a lesson to teach others what happens to the disobedient slaves of Allah ﷻ. The boy wrote a will requesting to Ḥasan al-Baṣri رحمه الله to lead his funeral prayer. Initially, he had refused to do so because the boy would never listen to any of his advices. Nevertheless, Ḥasan al-Baṣri رحمه الله took a quick nap in the afternoon and in his dream, a voice called out: "How can you refuse to pray the funeral prayer of My friend?" This is the fruits of sincere repentance. Within moments, one becomes a friend of Allah ﷻ.

In short, don't ever be despondent in the mercy of Allah ﷻ or become prey to the traps of the devil.
Allah ﷻ forgives all sins.
*{يا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ}*
_"O My servants who have exceeded the limits against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allahﷻs mercy, for Allah ﷻ certainly forgives all sins."_ (Az-Zumar 53)
```May Allah ﷻ grant us the ability to practise on everything that has been said. Āmīn```
