Sayyiduna Uqbah ibn ‘Amir رضي الله عنه reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, what will save us (from the punishment of the Hereafter and from the displeasure of Allah?”) The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Control your tongue, let your house be enough for you, and weep over your sins.”
Shaikh Saadi ؒ says:
نـفـس و شـیـطان زد کـــریــمـــا راه من رحـمـتـــت بـاشـد شـفـاعــت خــواه مــن
“My nafs and Shaytan have displaced me from the correct path, only Your mercy, O Allah, can save me from these”
Allah ﷻ has mentioned in the 13th Juz of the Quran in regards the nafs:
وَمَا أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِي ۚ إِنَّ النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّي ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّي غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
[12:53]
The nafs is what leads a person astray. We can only be saved due to the mercy of Allah ﷻ.
We should ask Allah ﷻ ‘O Allah we cannot save ourselves. Only You can save us’.
There is a saying in Arabic in reference to controlling the tongue
جسمه صغير وجرمه كبير
The tongue is very small in size but it's harm can cause great damage.
There are many sins that can be committed by means of the tongue. In one moment it can send someone to Jahannam for eternity. May Allah ﷻ save us. And in one moment someone can go to Jannah due to the tongue (for example: saying the kalima)
Sometimes enjoyment is in the sin.
For example someone will have a lot of enjoyment in backbiting about others but for someone to say ‘we shouldn’t backbite’ is really difficult. We find it easy and fun to talk about useless things but to read the Quran and say useful things is difficult.
Don’t leave the house without need. For example at the moment we are under lockdown so we should stay in our homes. There is benefit for us in this; we will save ourselves from sins.
Sometimes when leaving the masjid after salah we may even sin. People miss their sunnah prayers and spend time talking and laughing outside. If we stay in our households we will stay away from sin.
If you have sinned against others then ask them for forgiveness. If the sin is between you and Allah ﷻ then ask Him for forgiveness.
We should shed tears whilst seeking forgiveness. If we are unable to tear then we should make our facial expression as though we are crying. If we can’t cry when making dua then there is a dua that Rasullullah ﷺ would pray:
اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي عَيْنَيْنِ هَطَّالَتَيْنِ تَسْقِيَانِ الْقَلْب بذُرُوفِ الدُّمُوعِ ، مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تًكُونَ الدّمُوْعُ دَمًا ، وَالْأَضْرَاسُجَمْرًا
This dua can also be found in Munajat Maqbul, compiled by Sheikh Ashraf Ali Thanwi ؒ
Hadhrat DB gave advice to the student who completed his memorisation of the Noble Quran to become an Aalim in order to help him act upon the words of the Qur'an.
We will regret not having learned important religious acts.
May Allah ﷻ give us tawfiq.
