How to save yourself from Shaitan

*Summary of Iṣlāḥī Majlis by Shaykhul-Ḥadīth Ḥaḍrat Mawlāna Ādam ibn Yūsuf Ṣāḥib

1st August 2021 | 23rd Dhul-Hijjah 1442AH

_Sayyidunā Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه reported: Rasūllullah ‎ﷺ said, “Verily, Shaitān flows through the human being like the flowing of blood.”_

(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2174)

Not only does Shaitān encourage us to commit sinful actions, he also spoils our internal state by creating doubts and negative thoughts.

When we have a negative thought, we have been taught by Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ that we should recite the following dua:

*‎اللَّهُمَّ اعْصِمْنِي مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ*

_O Allah, protect me from Shaitān._

If we can’t learn this dua by heart, then we can say in any language _’O Allah save me from Shaitān’._

It has been mentioned in a hadīth, that a person who recites Sūrah Yāsīn once, receives the reward of reciting the Holy Qur'ān ten times, therefore we should recite it daily. (as reported in Sunan Tirmidhī)

In the Qur'ān, Allah ‎ﷻ mentions regarding Shaitān:

*أَلَمْ أَعْهَدْ إِلَيْكُمْ يَا بَنِي آدَمَ أَن لَّا تَعْبُدُوا الشَّيْطَانَ ۖ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ*

_"Did I not direct you, O children of ’Ādam , that you must not worship the Satan, (because) he is an open enemy for you."_ [36:60]

Once Sayyidatunā Umm Salama رضي الله عنها came to meet Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ in the masjid for an issue she had to discuss, whilst he ‎ﷺ was in I’tikaaf. When she was leaving, a sahābi saw Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ and his wife. Later, Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ explained to the sahābi that it was his wife (to eliminate any doubts of wrongdoing). The sahābi was shocked and mentioned he would never have had doubts about Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ. Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ explained to him that he ‎ﷺ had made the clarification to eliminate any possible doubts. This shows us that we should try to save others from Hellfire too!

This is why it is said :

*اتّقوا من مواضع التّهم*

_Stay away from situations that could cause accusations._

Shaitān is always trying to make us sin but, there are two times when he tries extra hard to deceive us: during salāh and when we are in the toilet.

During salāh he tries to divert our thoughts and in the toilet he tries to deceive us. This is why Allah ‎ﷻ has instructed us to recite the dua before entering the toilet:

*اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ*

_O Allah, I seek refuge with you from all evil and evil-doers._

We should also enter with our left foot. By doing this, we will have closed the door to Shaitān InshāAllah.

The more you try to make Shaitān stay away, the more he will try to deceive you. The sahāba once asked Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ what they can do if they keep having negative thoughts. Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ asked the sahāba that when they would have such thoughts whether they felt happy or sad. The sahāba expressed to Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ their extreme sadness on these thoughts. Rasūlullah ‎ﷺ then said ‘This is clear Imān’.

The one who performs salāh correctly and recites Qur'ān correctly etc. will have waswasah (negative thoughts). The theif will always go to a house where there is money, not a house which is empty.

In the same way Shaitān, who is notorious for his thieving exploits, will see the wealth of deeds of a person and will try to lead them astray.

Work hard on keeping your children on Deen and you will be saved from many worries. Try to keep your children with you always in order to supervise them, even when travelling or shopping etc. When children are alone, negative thoughts come to them and this is how they go astray.

*Some treatments for the deception of Shaitān:*

▪︎Sit with the people who know how to evade Shaitān’s trickery. Sometimes he deceives us without us even knowing what he is doing. If we sit with the pious who understand this trickery, they can help us to escape from him. InshāAllah, if someone works hard to be good, then Shaitān cannot deceive them no matter how much he tries. Allah ‎ﷻ mentions in the Quran

His authority is only over those who befriend him. [16:100]

▪︎The way to deal with these negative thoughts is, to not concentrate on them rather to Ignore them. If you ignore them, then slowly slowly they will stop. Just like a fly sitting on the outside of a window isn’t inside the house, though it seems it is, the negative thoughts from Shaitān will not remain inside the heart.

```May Allah ﷻ grant us the ability to practise on everything that has been said. Āmīn```
