When Allah ﷻ wants good for a slave

Summary of Iṣlāḥī Majlis by Shaykhul-Ḥadīth Ḥaḍrat Mawlāna Ādam ibn Yūsuf Ṣāḥib دامت بركاته

‎مولاي صل وسلم دائمًا أبدًا

‎على حبيبك خير الخلق كلهم

عن انس قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : ان الله تعالي إذا أراد الله بعبد خيرا استعمله ، فقيل : كيف يستعمله يا رسول الله ؟ قال : يوفقه لعمل صالح قبل الموت. (رواه الترمذي)

"Sayyidina Anas رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ‎ﷺ said: "When Allah ﷻ wants good for a slave, He puts him in action." It was said: "How does he put him in action O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said: "By making him meet up with the righteous deeds before death." (Tirmidhī)

This ḥadīth implies that the one whom Allah ﷻ’s favour and mercy is bestowed upon and whom He intends good for, such a person will be given the opportunity to make sincere tawbah (repentance) and carry out good deeds. He remains occupied in the obedience of Allah ﷻ until he achieves taqwā (God-consciousness). He is always engaged in tawbah, resulting in a khātimah bil khayr (death with a good ending).

This ḥadīth is concise but gives a very great glad tiding. It also shows the virtue of living a long life, provided it is accompanied by good.

No matter how long we live, we must endeavour to:

- Make abundant our repentance

- Focus ourselves upon turning to Allah ﷻ

- Build a firm connection with Allah ﷻ.

When a person is given a long life accompanied with these, then this is a big favour from Allah ﷻ, as opposed to the one who is granted a shorter life and passes away at a younger age without many good deeds. A man may lead a long life far away from the obedience of Allah ﷻ, thereafter he may be given the guidance to make tawba. At this point, he must not be hopeless in Allah's ﷻ mercy. To be hopeless of His mercy is a form of kufr (disbelief). Allah ﷻ promises that as long we repent, He ﷻ will forgive.

'Allāmah Buṣayri (رحمه الله) states in his Qaṣīdah Burdah Sharīf

يا نفس لا تقنطي من زلة عظمت إن الكبائر في الغفران كاللمم

لعل رحمة ربي حين يقسمها تأتي على حسب العصيان في القسم

'O my soul, do not become despondent due to your grievous sins. Verily major sins when pardoned become minor'

'Perhaps when the Mercy of my Lord is distributed, the share of each person will be in accordance to his sins'

Do not hope for long life with such a thought that in the future, we will change our ways. Some individuals delay in performing Ḥajj, thinking that they are too sinful to perform it at this time and assume that will do it later. This is not the correct manner of carrying out deeds.Shayṭān will whisper negative thoughts in our mind but we must remind ourselves that Allah ﷻ is great.

يا رب واجعل رجائي غير منعكس

'O Lord, let my hopes in You never be unfulfilled’

Look at how many people lead a life of sin, yet still, we see that after some time they too can change their ways and became the beloved of Allah ﷻ. Many young people are dying morning-evening. With the current pandemic, nobody anticipated the numbers that would pass away because of it. We do not know when we will get the time for tawba. If one makes sincere tawbah and thereafter dies, Allah ﷻ will accept his tawba.

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

Say (on My behalf), “O servants of Mine who have acted recklessly against their own selves, do not despair of Allah ﷻ's mercy. Surely, Allah ﷻ will forgive all sins. Surely, He is the One who is the Most-Forgiving, the Very-Merciful." (Al Zumar, 53)

This verse was revealed in reference to a particular incident. A companion, Ḥaḍrat Waḥshi رضي الله عنه in his pre-Islamic days, had martyred Ḥaḍrat Ḥamza رضي الله عنه. (Ḥaḍrat Waḥshi رضي الله عنه embraced Islam thereafter.) However, Ḥaḍrat Waḥshi رضي الله عنه was so fearful of his condition with Allah ﷻ due to this action of his, that it resulted in this verse being revealed. It was a verse which promised glad tidings and forgiveness.

May Allah ﷻ grant us the ability to practise on everything that has been said. Āmīn
