Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu reports, “The Sahaabah asked, ‘O’ Messenger of Allah, you joke with us?’ Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam replied, ‘Yes, I do not say but the truth.”
When joking make sure that whatever you are saying is not a lie. Also make sure you are not hurting someone.
The prophet peace be upon him always spoke the truth, even when joking.
Anas ibn Malik radiyallahu anhu relates that a person requested Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam that he be given a conveyance. Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam replied, “The baby of a camel shall be given to you.” The person said, “What shall I do with the baby of a camel O’ Messenger of Allah?” (I want one for a conveyance). Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam replied, “Every camel is the baby of a camel.”
Make sure you do not hurt anyone whilst joking, it is a big sin.
Imam Ghazali RA says that the tongue is such an important part of the body. It is used for accepting imaan, and for leaving Imaan. It is also used to hurt someone.
Sometimes we perform tahajjud and other nafl prayers, but we don't stay away from haram actions like hurting others. We should perform these nafl prayers, but we should stay away from hurting others.
May Allah give us the tawfiq
