Earning money for your needs

*Summary of Durūd Majlis by Shaykhul-Ḥadīth Ḥaḍrat Mawlāna Ādam ibn Yūsuf Ṣāḥib دامت بركاته*

27th October 2022

_Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Zakariyya عليه السلام was a carpenter”_

Rasūllullah ‎ﷺ has mentioned the virtue of working with your hands for your living. Working for a living is what all the prophets عليهم السلام did.

To get money for free seems very easy, but there is usually a lot of dishonesty in getting money for free. Getting money from benefits dishonestly is harām. Rasūllullah ‎ﷺ mentioned the virtue of earning for your food and other necessities. Rasūllullah ‎ﷺ himself also worked as a shepherd. Look at his great status, but he still earned. There is also a lot of barakah in the money we earn.

O you who believe, do not devour each other’s property by false means, unless it is trade conducted with your mutual consent.

[4:29]

Imām Abū Hanifa ؒ  was such a great mujtahid. Once he stood to perform salāh in front of the ka’bah and he recited 15 juz in one rakāh and 15 juz in the next rakāh. When he finished his salāh he admonished himself in order to be free from having pride.

He was also a businessman. Once he received some cloth that had some defects. He told his worker that before selling it, inform the buyer of the defect. The worker forgot to disclose the defect to the buyer. Imām Abū Hanifa ؒ   gave all the money that they earned that day to the poor.

He was so generous that he would donate clothes to widows for the year.

He had a lot of barakah and he would never say no to anyone who came to ask for money.

We learn from these stories the importance of earning halāl livelihood.

Abdullah ibn Mubārak ؒ  was a student of Imām Abū Hanifa ؒ . He once went to Shām (the area around Syria). There he borrowed a pen from someone, then according to plan, set off for Iran. He realised after reaching Iran that he had forgotten to return the pen. He then traveled back to Syria especially to return the pen. This was the importance he gave to something so small. The man he returned the pen to, said it was such a small thing to return from such a far away place. But, Abdullah ibn Mubārak ؒ  said it’s small in this world but in the hereafter it is a big thing.

We should prepare for the hereafter.

For eid we prepare the clothes days in advance. We don’t decide in the morning to go to the tailor or shop to buy clothes. In the same way, we should prepare for the hereafter in advance in this world.

Even if it is 5 pence, keep remembering that you need to give it. May Allah ‎ﷻ give us Tawfīq.

We can only achieve anything through working hard. We may have a little hardship in this world. Shaytān wants to distract us with the opposite gender and money.

```May Allah ﷻ grant us the ability to practise on everything that has been said. Āmīn```
