Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنهnarrated that the Messenger of Allah ‎ﷺ said: "Who will take these statements from me, so that he may act upon them, or teach one who will act upon them?" So Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said: "I said: 'I shall O Messenger of Allah!' So he ‎ﷺ took my hand and enumerated five (things), he said: "Be on guard against the unlawful and you shall be the most worshiping among the people, be satisfied with what Allah has alloted for you and you shall be the richest of the people, be kind to your neighbor and you shall be a believer, love for the people what you love for yourself and you shall be a Muslim. And do not laugh too much, for indeed increased laughter kills the heart."

-Be on guard against the unlawful and you shall be the most worshiping among the people-

Stay away from unlawful actions whether they are spiritual or apparent actions. If you make a mistake and do something unlawful, then ask for forgiveness from Allah ‎ﷻ straight away.

From this we understand that to become a Friend of Allah ‎ﷻ or a pious person, we need to stay away from sins. The ulama have written that if a person doesn’t put effort behind staying away from sins, but does a lot of nafl actions, his actions will bring no nur in his heart.

Some ulama like Hadhrat Junaid Bagdadi ؒ and Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani ؒ would be in deep thought and on guard, trying to avoid sin at all time.

If one doesn’t stay away from sin, he himself we will realise that there is no nur in his actions. His heart won’t be fully interested in the good deed he is doing, such that he won’t even realise what he has prayed in his salah. This is because the nur of his actions are not there due to his sins.

An example to compare this to is having condiments to food. The food is the main part of the meal; the condiments are the sides for the main meal.

If you were served only the condiments like chutneys and dips, you would not want to eat it alone. If you were served only the main meal with no sides, you would still be able to eat.

In the same way, if you only pray a lot of extra prayers (the condiments) but have no inclination to stay away from sin, there is no nur in your extra prayers. If you stay away from sin and don’t pray many extra prayers, you would still be fulfilling your commitments

Next in the Hadith Sharif is mentioned:

-Be satisfied with what Allah has alloted for you and you shall be from the wealthiest of the people-

Ask from Allah ‎ﷻ but don’t complain to everyone that you don’t have enough money. Be happy with what Allah ‎ﷻ has predestined for you.

Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani ؒ has explained that whatever is written in your taqdeer, you will attain it in whatever state you are in, even with your full effort sometimes. But whatever is not written in your taqdeer you will not attain it even if you complain to others. Be content on your taqdeer.

Hadhrat Saadi ؒ mentions

Real richness is from your heart not your wealth.

If someone has a lot of money but is not content on it, he is poor. If a person, has little belongings or money but is content on it, he is wealthy.

The third point mentioned is

Be kind to your neighbor and you shall be a believer

In many ahadeeth, it has been emphasised for us to be good to our neighbours.

We should not trouble them in anyway. Even if we recite the Quran kareem loudly during the night it is wrong if it disturbs our neighbours. They would have a right to complain.

The fourth point:

Love for the people what you love for yourself and you shall be a Muslim

We want good health for ourselves so we should want it for others too. We should make dua for the health of others too.

Hadhrat Thanwi ؒ once said that many people ask me to make dua for them, I can’t remember every persons name; so I make one dua after every salah: اللهم كُلَّ خَيْرٍ لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ وَّمُسْلِمَةٍ

O Allah I ask You for goodness for every muslim (male and female)

Even for non-muslims we should make good dua. We want imaan for ourselves so we should make dua that they are granted imaan.

The fifth point:

-And do not laugh too much, for indeed increased laughter kills the heart-

We shouldn’t laugh continuously. The one who doesn’t have the worry of the hereafter laughs a lot.

Rasullullah ‎ﷺ never laughed loudly. He smiled showing his teeth. Laughing a lot will make the heart oblivious to good actions and spirituality.

If we try not to laugh a lot loudly, we will create spirituality in our hearts, we will want to remember Allah ‎ﷻ and nur will be created in our hearts.

May Allah ‎ﷻ give us tawfiq.

The main thing we need to have is worry of the Hereafter. Right now we are so worried about the coronavirus. We are constantly trying to find medicines and cures. We should also fear Allah ‎ﷻ and remember that we are going to die one day. We have to die one day, whenever it is, through whichever means. Allah ‎ﷻ mentions in the Quran:

قل متاع الدنيا قليل والآخرة خير لمن اتقى

Say to them: 'There is little enjoyment in this world. The World to Come is much better for the God-fearing

[4:77]

All that is on earth will perish. And there will remain the Essence of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.

[55:26/7]

If we remember death then to stay away from sins will become easy. And if we commit a sin by mistake it will become easy to cry and ask for forgiveness.

Death is closer than everything.

May Allah give us tawfiq.
