_'Uqbah bin 'Āmir (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), "How can salvation be achieved?" He replied, "Control your tongue, keep to your house, and weep over your sins."_ [At-Tirmidhī].
The hadīth mentions three things, by which if one acts upon them he will attain salvation and be saved from difficulty both in this world as well as the hereafter.
*1)To control/safeguard the tongue*
A person should think before he speaks. Before speaking he should consider, whatever I am going to say, will it upset Allah ﷻ? Will Allah ﷻ be displeased with me?Upsetting Allah ﷻ can also be by upsetting his slaves.
*An activity for self reflection:*
One activity a person can do is to keep a tape recorder by him from the moment he wakes up till the time he goes to sleep. Then in the evening he should assess what he spoke the whole day. This way one can reflect over his words and see are they a means of reward or sin?
It is important we dont cause difficulty to anyone. A simple example would be calling a child by pretending there is something in your hand. There was once a sahābī who called a child towards him doing this same action. Holding his hand out towards the child. The Prophet ﷺ asked the sahābī is there something in your hand? The sahābī replied in the affirmative. If there was nothing in the hand of the sahābī, this would have been a sin.
*2) Not to leave the house except with a need*
If one goes out to earn a livelihood then that is not a problem at all. To earn is also an ibaadah. Allah ﷻsays in the Qur'an:
*فَإِذَا قُضِيَتِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةُ فَٱنتَشِرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱبْتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًۭا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ*
_"Once the prayer is over, disperse throughout the land and seek the bounty of Allah. And remember Allah often so you may be successful"( 62 :10)_
An example would be working in a factory. As long as one works in accordance to the rulings of shariah there is no harm. Such as there should be no free mixing or any form of sin.
It should be such that the hands are working and the heart is connected to Allah ﷻ. Not that his hands are working but heart and focus is towards women etc.
*3) Crying over your sins*
The outcome of crying over one's sins is that a noor (light) is created in the heart.
*Story of Shah Abdul Qādir*
There was an elderly pious person called Shah Abdul Qādir
He was connected to Shah waliyullah. He was once doing Dhikr for a long period of time (many hours). Due to this dhikr his face was full of noor. His every heart beat was "Allah Allah".
Outside the place he was doing dhikr there was a dog. Shah Abdul Qādir who was still engaged in Dhikr, suddenly his gaze fell onto the dog. Due to the abundance of noor Shah Abdul Qādir had, some of that noor also went onto the dog. Wherever this dog would go, all the dogs would come sit near him and stare.
An advice to the women:
*يَٰنِسَآءَ ٱلنَّبِىِّ لَسْتُنَّ كَأَحَدٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ ۚ إِنِ ٱتَّقَيْتُنَّ فَلَا تَخْضَعْنَ بِٱلْقَوْلِ فَيَطْمَعَ ٱلَّذِى فِى قَلْبِهِۦ مَرَضٌ وَقُلْنَ قَوْلًا مَّعْرُوفًا*
_"O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women: if you are mindful ˹of Allah˺, then do not be overly effeminate in speech ˹with men˺ or those with sickness in their hearts may be tempted, but speak in a moderate tone" (33:32)_
As women we should not speak softly towards any ghair mahārim or speak more than necessary.
This short-lived world
This world will not remain forever. Just as the seasons change, come and go, our time to go will also come. We should try and engage in lots of dhikr. As soon as we wake up, we should pray the dua for waking up.
After every fardh salaah one should pray three times:
*رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْوَهَّابُ*
"Our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after you have guided us. Grant us Your mercy. You are indeed the Giver ˹of all bounties" (03:08)
We should have both فكر and ذكر. They both come hand in hand. Similarly with happiness comes sadness. It is the cycle of life.
May Allah ﷻ grant us fikr-e-Aakirat (worry for the hereafter) and love of Allah and his messenger ﷺ
```May Allah ﷻ grant us the ability to practise on everything that has been said. Āmīn```
