Who is wise?

*Summary of Iṣlāḥī Majlis by Shaykhul-Ḥadīth Ḥaḍrat Mawlāna Ādam ibn Yūsuf Ṣāḥib

2nd August 2020 | 12th Dhul Ḥijjah 1441AH

_Shaddād bin 'Aws رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The wise person is the one who subjugates his self, and works for what is after death. And the incapable person is the one who follows his desires and merely hopes in Allahﷻ."_ (Tirmidhī 2647)

A wise person is the one who carries out actions in order to please Allah ﷻ. He fulfils Allah ﷻ's commands and he carries out good actions in hope of reward.

A foolish person on the other hand, is the one who follows his desires irrespective of whether it is permissible or not. Consequently, such a person frequently sins and does not repent. Such a person merely hopes, that because Allah ﷻ is The Most Forgiving, He ﷻ will surely forgive them for their sins (without the need of repentance).

Indeed, Allah ﷻ is The Most Forgiving. Allah ﷻ says in the Qur'ān:

_"Oh mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous?"_ (Al Infiṭār 6)

In this verse, there is a lesson in the words _'بِرَبِّكَ الْكَرِيمِ (bi rabbik al-Karīm)_. This verse teaches us that we should not follow our carnal desires and temptations. However, the fact still remains that if we were to slip in such a manner, then we must seek forgiveness, because as has been mentioned in the verse that, _your Lord, the Generous_

In other places in the Qur'ān, Allah ﷻ says:

_[Oh Muhammad ‎ﷺ], inform My servants that it is I who am The Forgiving, The Merciful. And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment._ (Al Hijr 49-50)

Allah ﷻ also says:

_Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good._ (Al A'rāf 56)

The word 'الْمُحْسِنِين (Muḥsinīn)' in this verse can also refer to those who fall into sin but then sincerely repent.

_Indeed, good deeds remove bad deeds._ (Hūd 114)

Even if it were the case that our sins reach the sky, we must not lose hope. We must ask for forgiveness from Allah ﷻ. We must not think as thus, "I will continue in my sinning now and when I reach the time of death I will seek forgiveness.’ We do not know if we will be given the opportunity to seek forgiveness at the time of death. Death is uncertain and we do not know when we will pass away.

(Our beloved Ḥaḍrat also mentioned the importance of reciting the following Du'ā' when sitting in any vehicle.‎

_"Exalted is He who has subjected this for us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it._)

If we have committed any sins, then we must take action. We must sincerely seek forgiveness from Allah ﷻ and have a firm intention of never comitting it again. If we relapse into that sin in the future then once again we must repent immediately.

If we look back at the aforementioned Ḥadīth, it mentions that a foolish person is the one who follows his carnal desires. The Qur'ān itself states that the lower self which follows desires (the nafs) and also the devil are your open enemies (for those who strive for success). The Qur'ān says,

_Shayṭān is to you a clear enemy_ (Al A'rāf 22)

_Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil_ (Yūsuf 53)

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur'ān:

_But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the self from [unlawful] inclination. Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge._ (Nāzi'āt 40-41)

May Allah ﷻ save us all from incurring His anger. This current situation is a great lesson for us all. If we don't take heed now, then when will we do so?!

Allah ﷻ says:

_And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will repent. And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We will take retribution from the criminals._ (Sajdah: 21-22)

Alḥamdulilah, our Masājid are opening from Monday 3rd August 2020. We should express our gratefulness to Allah ﷻ for granting us this bounty. Allah ﷻ grants wealth and blessings and also takes it away. Allah ﷻ is capable over everything. Similary Allah ﷻ mentions in the Qur'ān:

_And when affliction touches man, he calls upon Us, whether lying on his side or sitting or standing; but when We remove from him his affliction, he continues [in disobedience] as if he had never called upon Us to [remove] an affliction that touched him._ (Yūnus 12)

```May Allah ﷻ grant us the ability to practise on everything that has been said. Āmīn```
